If the very idea of treatment in a dental office fills you with extreme anxiety and/or dread – to the point that you resist the treatment you need, there may be underlying causes of this anxiety and dread which are not conscious.
Dental treatments are, by their very nature, invasive. A very sensitive part of the body is being accessed by a relative stranger. It doesn’t matter if you do not consciously perceive these dental procedures or treatments as dangerous or threatening. Your body (unbeknownst to you) may be responding “as if” it is about to be “invaded” or “attacked.” This will automatically set into motion a “fight/flight” response -- hence the anxiety and dread you experience.
Whether or not you have a history of negative experience(s) with a dentist that remain unresolved at a nervous system level and/or an emotional level, you may still find that you respond with a fight/flight response at the very thought of going to a dentist. This is because you may have had other experiences that remain unresolved at a nervous system level. To the extent that a dentist visit reminds your nervous system of that unresolved event, is the extent to which you may find yourself having these fight/flight reactions when a dentist visit is imminent.
But you do not have to continue to have these reactions. There is a modality that has proven extremely effective for resolving these kinds of nervous system imprints so that you no longer have these flight/fight responses when you know a dental procedure is necessary.
This modality is called Somatic Experiencing and it was developed by Dr. Peter Levine. Dr. Duggan is a Certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and so he himself, can be of assistance if you are suffering from these kinds of reactions. With his knowledge and expertise in the field of dentistry and his Somatic Experiencing training,
Dr. Duggan can assist you in getting the dental procedures you need without you having to experience all the extreme anxiety and dread that you have been suffering from to date.
Patients sometimes need dental treatments that cost thousands of dollars.
There is very little reliable information on the internet that can help patients understand the choices they may have. And many dentists do not present alternatives to their patients.
Those in need of these expensive dental treatments have a right to a complete picture of the treatment plan (which includes explanations and alternatives). This is especially true because many people may not have ready access to thousands of dollars.
You can see in the "Case Presentation" section, how a second opinion consult can give you the knowledge and control you need to make an informed decision. A second opinion can also give you the information you need to make a cost-effective decision (as cost effective as it can be can be, given what is necessary to restore your mouth to its esthetic and functional whole).
Dr. Duggan recently received a quote for a dental treatment that he, himself needed. He was quoted $3200. This dental work involved two extractions and periodontal therapy. In consultation with the periodontist, Dr. Duggan arrived at a strategy that may well postpone or eliminate the need for the most expensive part of the treatment plan.
Dr. Duggan may also be able to help you find a better, more cost-effective approach to satisfying your oral needs. He strives to find an approach that will be acceptable to your dentist, but one that may also save you considerable money, time and discomfort.
