Phobic patient management and referral
When you encounter a patient, who seems fearful of a dental treatment that you are recommending, you might consider referring them to a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. Sometimes patients have a previous experience locked in their bodies at a nervous system level and that is driving their resistance to treatment (unbeknownst to them).
Dr. Duggan himself is a Certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. What Dr. Duggan himself brings, of course, is an “inside” and “technical” understanding of the invasive nature of certain dental procedures. Because of his Somatic Experiencing Training he also understands how individuals may perceive and respond to these invasive procedures (often in ways that make them resistant to further treatments that they may need).
Though Dr. Duggan is himself a Somatic Experiencing practitioner, we can also refer clients to other well-trained SE Practitioners in the area. With his help, or the help of another SE Practitioner, you may well, for the first time, be able to provide the comprehensive treatment that your patient needs.
Second opinion referrals
When you propose a complex and expensive treatment plan to a patient, there may be inadequate time to explain the reasoning, strategies or alternatives. A patient may question your fee for such services or doubt that they really need all of the services or procedures you are recommending. For any of these reasons your patients may seek a second opinion from another practicing dentist.
Sometimes other practicing dentist may undercut your quote by eliminating certain necessary procedures from the treatment plan, or convincing the patient in other ways, that the work should be done at their office instead.
By utilizing Dr. Duggan as a “2nd opinion” resource, you will eliminate the possibility of having your client persuaded by other practicing dentist to have the dental work carried out elsewhere. Dr. Duggan has no private practice and does no dental treatments. His only motivation is to educate the patient and help the patient to make an unbiased and informed decision, based on a clear understanding.
If you direct patients seeking a 2nd opinion to our website, they can register for an appointment. As long as you provide the radiographs and charting, Dr. Duggan will examine them intra-orally and put together a picture of your strategy. He will then explain the strategy to your patient, in detail, so that your patients can feel more confident that they are making a good choice for themselves.
